A Google revelou os seus planos para lançar a Knol, uma enciclopédia virtual que concorrerá com a Wikipédia.
Vai chamar-se Knol, de knowledge, conhecimento em inglês e é o projeto do Google para criar uma enciclopédia virtual que rivalize com a Wikipédia.
O sistema é conhecido: os utilizadores editam as entradas, a Google fornece as ferramentas de edição e o alojamento. O perfil de cada utilizador vai estar ao lado de cada entrada que faça, dando-lhes também um destaque.
«Os livros têm o nome do escritor na capa, os artigos estão assinados pelo autor, mas na web, a autoria fica um pouco esquecida. Acreditamos que saber quem escreveu permite melhorar a utilização de conteúdos na Internet», escreveu Udi Manber, do Google.
O objetivo é que o Knol seja a fonte primária de todo o conhecimento na Internet, abrangendo áreas tão distintas como a História, Medicina, Ciência, Geografia ou o Entretenimento.
Sendo um sistema aberto, editável por qualquer pessoa, não se pode esperar que todos os artigos tenham sempre grande qualidade. A Google, no entanto, quer assegurar que o Knol figure sempre em primeiro lugar nas pesquisas feitas em motores de busca.
O sistema ainda está em testes na Google, só acessíveis com convite, não havendo qualquer perspectiva de uma versão beta em público.

It will be called Knol, from knowledge, and the sistem works like this: the clients edit the entry, the Google provides the tools of edition and the lodge. The profile of each client will be next to each entry he publishes, detaching them.
Books have the author's name in front, the articles are signed by him, but in web the authorship gets a little forgotten. We belive that know the author allows a better use of the Internet contents, said Udi Mander, from Google.
The objecive is that Knol becomes the primary source of all knowledge of the Internet, covering very discretive areas, like History, Medicine, Science, Geography or the Entertainment.
As a open sistem, editable by anyone, it can't be expected that every article has a great quality. The Google, however, wants to ensure that Knol aways gets the first place in quests made in search engines.
The sistem is still being tested in Google, just accessible with an invitation, not having any perspectives of a beta version in public.
